Project management is the discipline of planning, organizing, and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of a project to achieve specific goals and objectives. Management of challenging projects is complex, and as such requires the development of distinct technical skills and the adoption of systemic management tools and techniques.

The primary challenge of project management is to achieve all of the project goals and objectives while honoring the preconceived project constraints. Typical constraints are scope, time and budget. The secondary, and more ambitious, challenge is to optimize the allocation and integration of inputs necessary to meet pre-defined objectives, minimize risk, and complete the project ahead of schedule.

DLBA uses the Ship Work Breakdown Structure (SWBS) to subdivide the effort required to achieve a successful vessel design or construction project. SWBS provides a common framework for the natural development of the overall planning and control of a project. It is the basis for dividing work into definable increments (e.g., systems, subsystems, components, tasks, subtasks, and work packages) from which statements of work can be developed so that technical activities, schedule, cost, and labor hour reporting can be established. DLBA tools to achieve these goals are action lists, monthly reports, Gantt charts, and Critical Path identification.

DLBA's project managers have experience with a wide range of projects that span from small in-house troubleshooting tasks to completing challenging designs of complex vessels by integrating the efforts of team members on several different continents. Our project managers are currently involved in formal training for certification as Project Managers by the Project Management Institute.
