Naval architecture is an engineering discipline dealing with the design, construction, modification, and repair of marine vessels. Marine vessels are among the largest, most complex, and highly valued movable structures produced by mankind. Naval architecture involves basic and applied research, design development, calculations, and design evaluation. The areas of involvement span from the concept design through the preliminary design to the detailed design, followed on by construction support/oversight, sea trials, and eventually maintenance and repair during operation.

Due to the complexity associated with operating in a marine environment naval architecture is an integrating process between groups of technical specialists in particular fields coordinated by a lead naval architect. This demanding leadership role requires knowledge of many technical disciplines, managerial qualities, and the ability to bring together the often-conflicting demands of the various design constraints to produce a product which is fit for the purpose. In addition to this leadership, a naval architect also has a specialist function in ensuring that a safe, economic, and seaworthy design is produced.

DLBA is proficient in all of the technical disciplines that comprise naval architecture including hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, dynamic stability, seakeeping, structures, arrangements, resistance, and propulsion. We also have extensive experience in acting as the lead naval architect on projects with challenging requirements.

DLBA provides naval architecture services for shipyards, ship owners, other design firms and consultancies, equipment manufacturers, regulatory bodies, navies, and governments. Our area of expertise focuses on high speed craft ranging in size from 21 feet to 300 feet in length. DLBA's design experience and support includes recreational boats and yachts, military, paramilitary, and commercial vessels.
